can't remove sash due to being stuck on old weathers stripping

I'm trying to fix the pulleys on my bottom sash as the rope is cut. I've removed the stopbead, but can't pull the sash out because of the grooved weather stripping. I clipped out most of it and figured I'd buy and put in new,but there is about thee inches of weatherstripping at the top of the sash that is preventing me from pulling the sash out.

can't remove sash due to being stuck on old weathers stripping

Is there any way to slip a thin putty knife or drywall knife in there in order to compress the old strip?

Thanks for the suggestion. The groove that is designed for the window to ride along is about a .5 cm tall and I don't know how to squish it when I can't get at it due to being stuck in the window

A picture would help--there are a couple of antique house restoration members here--along with a bunch of homeowners who have dealt with those weighted sashes--Mike---
