Cannot figure out how to remove door handle

Hi, I've got an old door handle and I can't seem to figure out the mechanics of how to remove it. I'm planning on replacing it with a locking handle. So far I've removed the two screws on the side, but the panel won't come off. I've looked all around the handle, and on the outer side only, there is a little metal slot that when pushed in with a screwdriver, allows one handle to come off. The other side has no such slot. However, when looking through the tube from the removed handle, I can see small metal tabs on the other side that look like they hold that handle on. I can't push them down though, with any tool I've tried. I'm not an expert, but I've replaced several door handles before, and this one has me completely stumped!!

The white escutcheon plate will have to be pryed off
gently. There's screws behind it.

Look close at the trim ring, there's a tiny rectanguler hole, that's where it pops off.
The knob had the same set up.

Score the paint seal around it first (utility knife), use a slot head in the indent (1 o'clock position).

Thanks guys, so just to make sure, it's the plate that covers the knob from the door? I think I have found a small slot buried under a lot of paint, in about the 7 o'clock position, so I just use a flat-head to pry the cover off? (I'm trying to avoid damaging the door or the handle)

Most you push in and it releces a metal clip holding it in place.

Thanks guys. The plate gave way after a lot of paint scraping off. The new knob is now on!
