Can someone school me on window replacement?

I have a 36" x 36" horizontal sliding vinyl window in the basement that needs replacing. The dimensions of this window are actually 36". The ones at the big box stores are actually 35.5". What gives??

I guess I need to know the difference between new construction and replacement windows.....

new construction windows have a flange around them. this nailing flange fastens the window to the structure.

replacement windows do not have this flange. they slid into a hole. and are screwed down (this is a very basic definition). this window replacement method is much less disturbing to the structure.

That gives you 1/4 inch all around to shim plumb and level. A lot of RO's are not. Use shim, check for plumb level and square, through and pilot drill, and use stainless steel screws. Use foam backerod on the outside, and inject and tool color matched high quality silicone sealant around the window. You should install a drip cap and sill pan depending on the application. I would use a casement window if you can. Much tighter.
