building doors
Is it cost effect to build your own doors? I need a couple of 7' tall doors, one for a pocket door and one set of french doors. The french doors are 32" wide (2x16") and the pocket door is 30" wide. I'd like for the french doors to be 5 lite and the pocket to be 4 pannel flat pannel. The quote i'm getting for the french doors is about $600 plus shipping and the pocket door I can't find one under $220. Would it be worth it to try and build my own doors, and if so, does anyone have any guidance on how to do so?

Oh' boy. I'm a cabinet maker and I can't build interior doors because of the costs.

You need a shaper--$$$$$ --stile and rail cutter $$$$$ Panel cutters $$$$$$

And a raft of expensive tools used only for door building.(Jointer-surface planer-cabinet saw-and more)

It is only practical for a person who wishes to go into the door making business.--Sorry.

geez mike...i'm glad you're not santa clause.:( Thanks for the info....I guess i'll have to buy one. I just thought about making one my self when I cut down an old door I had and saw how it was built. Seems they just had 2x6s(maybe) cut down to make the outter edge and middle (2 pannel door). then the rest of the door was just 1/4" plywood or some panneling that was held in place only by a trim around the boarder. Seemed pretty simple. Perhaps not.

I wish he was. I'd like a 1-3/4 stile and rail set.

I'd love to have a shaper and a set of those cutters myself----

I wish I had bought a shaper 40 years ago --Oh, wait ,it'd be an antique now. Darn.

The shaper I got. Big stile & rail cutters I don't.

I'd love to know enough about this stuff to know those are tools I should want to have. Mike, would you say building your own cabinets is a little more feasible? I'm wanting to get into wood working to do some custom built-in in my house so I wasn't sure if I could tackle doing cabinets as well. Would it bring the cost down any to DIY? The house was built in 1839 and i'm wanting to do an older look to the cabinets so nothing too fancy.
