Bathroom door

Have a nasty hole in a hollow core bathroom door. Tried patching it with joint compound, then a coat of primer, then paint. I did sand the joint compound first of course but now after it has all dried it still looks ugly and pockmarked. Should I dig it out and redo with spackle instead?

Please advise, girlfriend is on my ass.

A whole new slab is about $25.00 or you can glue thin plywood to the one you have and just have to redill the hole for the knob.
