Vapor Barrier in Basement with XPS Rigid Foam?

Hi there,

I know all the sites say to not use a vapor barrier if using the 2" XPS directly to the foundation walls method, but my building inspector for my town in upstate NY says it will still be required and recommended using paper-backed fiberglass insulation in the 2x4 wall.

I'm certainly not going to win an argument with him, so I am curious, is this really that bad or am I fine doing this? Just wondering if anyone came across the same thing.

Nick

After some specific research for you, I found; 2010 (which you are not under yet) doesn't require any BELOW grade; http://publicecodes.cyberregs.com/st...0_4_par036.htm

Your 2007 State Energy Code says- #3. Where other approved means to avoid condensation (which is foamboard); http://publicecodes.cyberregs.com/st...7_4_par028.htm

Found it, 402.5 says ABOVE grade walls require vapor retarder/barrier; http://www2.iccsafe.org/states/new_y...y_frameset.htm

Show him/her the other code year print-outs and BSC for possibly letting you skip it, OR have them show you exactly where it says it is required BELOW-GRADE...
