Rigid foam insulation in attic?

What are the pros and cons of using rigid foam insulation in the attic? We have a small 1950's brick ranch in northeast Ohio, and currently there's about 6 inches of fiberglass insulation layed down, but it's not in very good shape. The roof is shallow but we've never had a problem with ice dams or large icecicles forming in the winter.

I like the idea of the rigid insulation because you can get an R-39 with just 6 inches of the Super TUFF-R. So that would allow me to someday put down flooring and use it for storage.

What about putting the foam in between the attic ceiling joists instead of the floor? As long as I leave a space for the air to flow up from the soffit vents, would that reduce the temperature swings in the attic while also avoiding moisture buildup and the possibility of ice dams forming on the roof?

Re: Rigid foam insulation in attic?

Air seal between the house and the attic first. Then check to see whether you have enough structure in the attic to use it for storage. On the assumption you do not, blown in cellulose is my first choice. Don't insulate the floor and ceiling, just the floor.
Windows on Wash likes this.

Do you mean the roof rafters instead of the ceiling joists (the ceiling structure of the room below is the same as the 'floor' of the attic)? By insulating between the roof rafters you would be trying to turn the attic space into the 'warm side', and without HVAC, the attic space will want to be the same temperature and humidity as the rest of the house.
