Is insulation needed?

I removed the soffit from the cantilevered portion of my house and noticed there is no insulation. It forms part of the floor to an upper bedroom. Should I install insulation before installing new plywood?

well always remember one of the laws of physics heat moves to cooler areas. You may not get harsh winter in San Fran but I'm sure you have hot summers. what do you think?

you can locate San Fran on this map to determine your climate zone. Look like 3C to me. Then go to Table 402.1.1 to determine your insulation requirements. These are found in the 2009 International Energy Conservation Code. A call to your local building department will confirm these values.

Hope this helps! Good luck!

Heck yeah - otherwise those hot days will be radiating heat up through that floor with very little resistance.

Thanks for the replies. I figured adding insulation wouldn't hurt and it would likely stablize temperatures in the house, hot or cold. The weather is pretty mild here but we do get a lot of wind blowing over those surfaces.

Thanks for the article. That gives me something to think about. An extension of my question would have been, do you insulate under floors.

You're welcome. Add cavity insulation and replace the 3/4" wood furring strips with rigid f.b., caulking/taping the joints/perimeter. Why heat/cool the outdoors; http://www.conservationtechnology.co...issionPathways

The coldest winter I have had was a summer in San Francisco.
