I've scoured the internet for answers and have come back more confused than when I started. Does any one know if there is a way to properly insulate under a flat-roof balcony without tearing off the ceiling of the living space below. The plan for the finished surface is EPDM with a deck on sleepers.
I've read articles that say you can either lay rigid foam on top of the deck or spray closed cell foam under the deck, but that requires add $$ and drywall mess. The way the door opens onto the balcony, I can't afford to add 2" of height with the XPS.
So my question is, is there a hybrid approach? Since the decking is torn off I have access from above. So I was thinking of putting Roxul down against the drywall then filling approx 2-3" of rigid XPS to the tops of the joists and air sealing. Like the following link, but only instead of spray foam I'd carefully place rigid. http://www.buildingscience.com/docum...ented_flat.jpg
