Insulating a low clearance crawl space
I currently live in a 1000 sq ft home that was built back in 1916-17, and I'm trying to figure out the best way of keeping it warm in the winter time. The attic is fairly well insulated, but neither the walls nor the crawl space is. I have hardwood floors in my house that I really like, even though it turns out that my floor is actually just nicely finished, original subflooring with nothing underneath it. Judging by how cold the floors get in cooler weather, I figure the crawl space is the best place to start.
I have a very dry, vented dirt floor crawl space with an external access door in the back of the house. There's plenty of clearance (about 30" or so) back there for me to go in and insulate the rear 1/3 of the house. However, due to the slight grade in the land, that 30" at the back of the house becomes maybe 1' at the front of the house. Furthermore, there are water pipes in the way that make accessing the front half even more difficult.
I'm trying to avoid any sort of excavation if at all possible (I've done it once before and don't want to do it again!), but the only other options I see are to pull up the [recently redone] floorboards and lay insulation that way, or to bite the bullet and see if a professional can come in and blow insulation in to those harder to reach places. Any ideas/recommendations/advice?
Or should I just learn to live with it and turn up the heat and get some space heaters?
