Insulating from exterior on old house

Need to insulate from exterior of old house. Want to remove old cedar siding insert R-14 backed batting and put up hardie planks.
Don't know if the batting and a tar paper is sufficient.
Old house has no insulation currently and know I can't blow any in.
Anyone got any knowledge in this area?

I don't know much but your location and climate are going to be important for temperature and dew point.

You want the wall to be able to dry in at least one direction.

+1

Google exterior foam sheathing as well as rain screen walls.

Somethings that will most likly need to be done if it's a really old house is fire blocking, sealing any holes where plumbing and wiring were done.
Up dating any wiring you find.

I saw no mention of any sheathing being used in your plan, ( I may have missed that) I would not install James Hardee over bare studs.
I would use house wrap not tar paper on the outside.
