Insulating a church catherdal ceiling

How can we increase the insulation and R-value for a catherdral ceiling in a approxiamtely 2,500 SF church? The ceiling is about 30 feet high in the center and is composed of about 30 squares that have a painted canvas on the ceiling now. We would like to save on the heating expense.

Pictures would help.

If the interior is not a candidate for disturbance, you need to go to the exterior side.

You can, theoretically, convert it to a conditioned/hot roof but that will require some proper sealing and rigid foam.
