insulating a ceiling

we recently removed the ceiling in the upstairs bedroom and noticed there was no insulation. We have a flat roof and would like to insulate to help with heating bills. How much insulation should i use? There is a 10 inch space between wooden roof and drywall ceiling. Does the drywall need an air space between it and the insulation?

Is the current roof vented?

The air space goes between the insulation and the underside of the roof and not the drywall.

More pictures will help in this case.
