how to insulate/rat proof under house?
Hi, I need help figuring out what I need to do to insulate and critter proof (from rats!) under my house which overhangs a cliff in Seattle. I don't have a standard crawl space under most of the house since my floor is well above the ground (>6') and is completely open to outdoors.
Here's what I'm thinking and my questions (disclaimer: I'm a total newby!):
I thought I'd string R-30 insulation between the beams, then put up plywood underneath to keep out the critters. Some questions:
Does it matter if the insulation is faced or unfaced?
Do I need any vapor barrier, and if so, is faced insulation good enough?
My beams are 7" deep, but insulation seems to come in 6 1/4 and 9" thickness. Is it worse to compress it by 2" or have a 3/4" gap?
Is plywood enough to keep out the rats?
