see pic. i have 1" xps going against the sheathing . and i am putting in 1" spacer on the stud, so i can still use 3 1/2" insulation. but in this spot , there is about 1 1/2" gap. removing that board is not a good idea for a few reasons. i am thinking to just get some fiberglas in there as best as possible, and call it a day. what do you think ?

you can pull the fg batts in half to thin them. if it's just one spot, it hardly matters if you stuff it in or split it. if this is a large area, well beyond the picture, it may be wise to get better insulation that fg batts; it is the worst there is. are you air sealing? that is the big issue.

i have 3 of those bays in this room, 4 total for 2 rooms on that side of the house. the one you see is where the closet door is in the room.

yes, i am air sealing. then, if things go well. i am going to put xps on the exterior under new siding.

sounds like you have things under control. there is a good article on greenbuildingadvisor.com (blog, i think) on how much exterior foam is adequate to keep the sheathing from getting cold, condensing, and rotting. in your area, 2" is probably enough, but i'd read the article and not rely on my memory. tape and air seal the foam, too. good luck.
