fire block

Fire blocks. Hmmm. I asked a building science guy about them about 3 yrs ago, in reference to dense packing cellulose around them. His answer was "Nobody really does fire blocks any more." That surprised me, but I've since learned (I think) that at least some areas do not require them under certain conditions, one being when you dense pack w/ cellulose. Anyone else have any feel for this? Maybe with more complex wall structures they are required; dunno.
