Crawlspace Insulation

1 Attachment(s)
I had a question about installing insulation under my house. Please excuse the horrible drawings.

I saw someone install foam board insulation before and they placed smaller strips to each side to create a gap(air pocket).

See picture.

Which way is correct?

Optimal installation, may require ignition barrier, check with local AHJ; Fig.7; http://www.buildingscience.com/docum...n-crawlspaces/

Depends on what you want for the end result; http://www.buildingscience.com/docum...al-performance

I can't really use fiberglass batts because of the moisture where my house is located. It would just attract mold too much. The picture I drew was just for foam board to add some insulation since I currently have none.

Which of those would work best? The foam board directly to the underside of the flooring or leaving a gap by placing a thin strip on either side?

my understanding is that gaps are bad.
