Attic ventilation

I have a hip roof. My attic needs good ventilation badly to prevent molds from growing. One estimate recommends power venting, another recommends continuous ridge vents, and more soffits. I would like safety in my house too. I've read one customer comment that used power venting, where his house almost burned do twn, but was caught early because a neighbor saw smoke coming from the roof and then fire ignited.

Please advise. Thank you. I. Haug

Attic ventilation

With mensuration formulas and some fussing you can figure out the volume of your hip roof attic in cu. ft., then ventilate with 5 to 60 Air Changes per Hour, with the average being 10.

That fire was a fluke unless his wiring to the fan was faulty or he ignored the fan installation instructions.

Attic ventilation

Had the same problem. Builder put in soffit venting then the insulation installers stuffed insulation and blocked most of them. I cleaned out what I could reach but it wasn't enough and still had moisture problems. I then installed 2 turbine vents and they pull enough air to have solved the problem.

Attic ventilation

Check your required NFVA: http://www.airvent.com/homeowner/pro...it-specs.shtml

Be sure the fan is rated for the space: http://www.nachi.org/attic-ventilati...s-part1-25.htm

Have you air-sealed the attic yet, to stop the moisture from below (stack effect): http://www.wag-aic.org/1999/WAG_99_baker.pdf

Do you have mold growing now? Where are you located?
