Attic Insulation Question

Hey all,

This is my first post. I'm in the process of buying a house and my fiance and I will be closing on it on March 2nd. The attic will need to be insulated after we move in. There's only 3 inches in the main area of the house and none in the addition they added on in the 60's. We'd like to do cellulose blow in insulation ourselves. What I'm confused on right now is if we need a vapor barrier. What is common practice? We are in central IL (Peoria, IL area)

Thanks!
Matt

I never see vapor barriers in attics.

Check out your ventilation first. You may have to install some baffles along the edge from the soffit up towards the ridge.

This is always a real pleasure to do after the fact.

Then you want to blow in r-50 of cellulose.

No vapor barrier.

No vapor barrier (at least not as most people think of it).

Air Seal and insulate.

Thanks everyone...that's what I was thinking.

Air seal, soffit vent chutes, and insulate. Sounds like a plan!
