Attic Insulation

My wife and I recently purchased a 2 story house and we are noticing a rather large temperature difference between the first and second story. I took a peek up in the attic and noticed that there is loose insualtion there already and the previous owners were kind enough to leave kraft faced R-19 insulation batts still packaged when they moved out. They started the project but never finished. My question is A) is faced the better option to unfaced for what I am looking to finish and B) if faced is fine does the facing go up or down? The way they had installed half the attic is with the facing up, but everything I have read about faced insulation is that the facing should go towards the house not towards the roof. Thank you for your help.

Attic Insulation

Depends on the location of the home (i.e. region of the country/world).

In most applications, vapor barriers are not required and used improperly.

Attic Insulation

We live in Madison Wisconsin. I don't necessarily need the vapor barrier but I already have it from the previous owners. If it is recommended not to have then I will buy new insulation.

Attic Insulation

Air seal the attic first and it won't much matter which side the vapor barrier is on.

No need to throw them out.
