Question

Another Basement Insulation question....

I've read some recent posts about how homeowners didn;t like the job done by their builders. Here in Toronto, my builder did a very good job. They used pink with vapour barrier up to the frost line. Therefore, about 4 feet of exterior concrete wall is bare.

My question is this, is it ok to fill the bottom half of the exterior walls with 2" XPS board, while the top half is the builders pink insulation. Where the XPS board meets the vapour barrier, I would use the red Tuk tape to seal the 2.

Generally my basement, here in Toronto, Canada is extremely cool in the summer months when the AC is on and warm when the furnace is on in the winter.

What are your thoughts???

sk

Are you saying the framing & insulation is on the outside of your concrete wall?

Sorry this is for the interior of the basement on my outside walls. Right now the outside walls are bare (i.e. no studs) except for the pink insulation down to the frostline. It;s the bare bottom half of the walls that Im concerned about.

I could have easily contacted someone to perform a 3" sprayfoam but the cost is a bit too much.

I'm planning on renovating my basement from scratch shortly so I;m trying to save some $$ on the walls and spend more on the flooring

Is there reasoning behind only insulating part of the basement wall?

I'll guarantee it's a fibreglass blanket on the wall that extends to 4 feet below grade(our frost line), nailed to the concrete.

Sunnybono, I've yet to see a house that has that "insulation" system installed, not have moisture behind the plastic at some part of the year. Plan on ripping it out and doing it the right way, not the minimum code way that its been done.
