advice please

PLEASE HELP! I live in a ranch house built in the late 40's. Two of the bedrooms are above the garage. I'm from Pa. & we've had a horrible winter this year. as a result, the BRs have been colder than usual. I want to insulate the garage. Here's the rub. The previous owner has insulated the joists with what I think is asbestos based insulation and finished the ceiling with 10 x 10 squares. A peek at the insulation tells me it has flattened & broken down over the years. I'm looking for the easiest fix. Can I put foam based sheeting over the entire mess and then drywall or will I ahve to remove everything & start from scratch? I don't wnat a super hor BR, just an undrafty one. Advice please..

Have a sample of the insulation checked for asbestos----if it is positive---then we'll talk---

+1

Figure out what type of asbestos it is. Even minimally disturbance of it (i.e. putting up foam over top) can make it friable, depending on the type.

Don't mess with this stuff unless you know what you are dealing with in terms of type and exposure risks.

I'm having trouble figuring out what type of asbestos-based insulation could ever be used to insulate ceiling joists from below?

All clear. The "asbestos" were nothing more than crumpled pieces of very old fiberglass product.
