My house is two years old and the landscapers mulched the front without laying landscaping fabric under. I'm tired of pulling weeds and replacing the mulch. It is a big area and somehow it seems most of the mulch disappears from summer to summer. If I want to lay down rocks, do I need landscape fabric under them? If so, can I lay the landscape fabric directly on top of the little mulch there is left, or do I need to pull that out and start from scratch? Thanks!
I would lay the fabric more to keep the rocks clean from the earth splashing up on them and from sinking in over time. Regardless of whether you lay fabric or not the odd weed seed will manage to germinate. Just give it a yank as they come.
Weed block is useless, I've never once seen a pro landscaper use it.
Weed can grow right though it and makes it harder to pull them out.
If your going to use stones I'd first pull all the weeds and spray total vegatation killer.
Add some Preen and it will stop new weeds from growing.
