Reshaping a boxelder

Hi Folks
Before I call a tree surgeon, I'm hoping someone can give me a heads up for free.
I have a hugh Boxelder in my yard that has a lot of dead branches to be cut out
this coming winter. this tree is about 40 years old and dangerous when storms come through.
I would like to keep it around for its greenery and shade.
My question can I hire a tree person to cut out all the main large limbs and top branches this would leave a trunk about 20 feet high and plenty of suckers to re grow into new limbs. I guess this would look dumb like a fist in the air until new growth spreads out. I know this tree can take a lot trimming. and still keep growing.but i'm talking about a scalping.
Is this a dumb question ?
I'm 76 years old and a new tree will not reach the height i would like before I leave this world.

Thanks robert75

To answer your question, yes, to a point. Leave it to the discretion of the expert.
