prepping a vegetable garden in sandy soil
okay i have an area i want to put my garden for next spring 2011.its gonna be about 2000 sq ft. it has been cleaned out and now there is nothing but sand there. i thought about mixing some soil from lowes into the sand but i dont want it to have to much nitrogen or phosphet in the ground and my plants not do good so if anybody could help i would appreciate it

I would get a couple loads of clean fill dirt, or more expensive, topsoil. Depends on what you want to grow.

Yeah I would definatley add some good soil. You could have a couple yards of topsoil delivered. 2000 sq ft is a good size garden. If it was mine I would ammend with topsoil and maybe some mushroom compost. I would say 5 yards minimum and that is very scarce if your all sand. I had a gravel truck deliver 30 yds for mine. I am about 1800 sq. ft That was years ago. I added about 2 yards of very well aged cow manure to it this year as well as a 12-12-12 fertilizer around each plant.
Whatever you do, if you want a good garden, don't skimp on the soil.
