Poop Tomatoes - Yes, I said, Poop Tomatoes.

We have a waste line break in our yard last winter. After I got things cleaned up I forgot about it.....

Today I discovered a two foot tall tomato plant in the former sewage swath - It's got tomatoes on it.

I'm not sure if this is cool or gross.

So: Cool or Gross?

I would think that by the time they got to the actual fruit stage that all harmful bacteria would have been dealt with by nature. I would not be afraid to eat them. Living where you do, you know what the farmers spread on the fields that smells so good? That has no adverse effects on us, at least until the EPA gets involved and decides to ban all natural fertilizer because of the lead content from the cows licking the barn walls

Out here on the shore they like chicken- and crab-slurry. Stinks so bad, it makes your eyes water.

Don't know that human waste makes a suitable fertilizer but you never know. Call your county Extension Agent and see what he has to say.

What's with the poll?

What isn't with the poll? Just wondering what people thought, and I guessed (wrong?) that people would think the poll was funny.

In Illinois, they put it on farm fields. That's how we (I work for the city) get rid of the sludge from the wastewater plant. Waste is treated, and liquid is released into the river, the solids build up until they are at a certain level, then it is removed, compacted/compressed, dried, and given away to farmers to spread on their fields.

If you found out after you had eaten one of them,, maybe you keep it "down",, No way you can look at that tomatoe, knowing where its nutrients came from and eat it.

I think if you saw even 10% of how food is grown, processed etc you would not eat period

So here's the funny part. My thought process was that since the overflow was in the winter it's from crappy hot-house tomatoes and who wants to eat them.
