How to pot plants?

I bought some Miracle Gro potting mix and I was wondering what other people do. Do you put only the potting mix?

How to pot plants?

I put about an inch of stones or broken clay pots in bottom of pot with a large pc over the hole, to allow for drainage. Deeper layer if its a large pot. I usually don't spend the extra money for MG potting soil, but it is good. Good ahead and fill the pot.

If you've bought a plant and its a tangle of roots (pot bound), use your fingers and loosen up the roots around the outside.

If you're using regular soil don't fertilize for a few weeks till the plant gets over the shock of being repotted. If my pot isn't too big to move, here in Fla., I put it in shade a few days till it gets accustomed to the new pot and light.
