When I bought this house three years ago this red maple looked not well to me. More dead branches this year and look at the bark on the trunk. Assuming this is not normal anything I can do our is this tree ready to go?
Cannot see the bark in the pick but the canopy looks pretty good, I would have it looked at by a professional arborist, such as Bartlett Tree Expert Co. It could probably use some fertilizer.
To have a professional arborist look at it used to be free( I bet it still is). I used to be one and it looks to me like it is trying to heal itself and a good feeding program would do wonders. You CAN do this yourself but it would probably be more cost effective to have a pro service do it.
If you spend any money put it towards a new tree of your liking. Sorry but my opinion is the tree is history. If you want a professional to look at it without spending money consider your extension service you are already paying for if there is a local service.
