What's the best way to patch drywall

I have done some reno's and now have to replace some drywall that I had removed while doing the reno's. Some patch's are round holes in the ceiling where I moved a light and some are on the wall where I took out a stub wall. My question is what would the experts do to prepair the edges of both the existing drywall and also the patches and how close to the original size do I make the patches(what should the gap be between the patch and the original) to make the mudding the easiest. Also when you cut out drywall there are quite often frayed edges so how would you prepair them before mudding(cut the 2 edges at a 45)?
Thanks in advance

PS: the replacing drywall is the same thickness as the original.

If the paper is frayed, then yes, trim it otherwise should be fine.

Here's a video you might be interested in for small repairs. For the circle cuts you can either cut new circles or square them off. Gap or no gap is fine.

Thanks for the link canadaclub. Every little tip is appreciated. Also if the paper is frayed would you trim both the hole and the patch or just the hole?
