what are these hairs in old plaster?


This plaster is 100 y.o., what are these hairs? I need to do some patching, what should I use?

while usually called ''horse hair'' in this country it was usually from cattle and hogs

what are these hairs in old plaster?


its added for strength. Same concept as rocks in concrete, mesh wire or rebar in concrete, fiberglass fibers in....... fiberglass (as opposed to just straight resin)

Lath looks intact so you should be alright with patching plaster. If it is a large area you could staple some wire mesh to the lath for reinforcement.
