What Size (thickness) Drywall (sheetrock) for this repair?

This question may be basic but as a widow I'm learning how to do things for myself. I just installed a new faucet in my tub/shower. I had to cut two holes in the wall to get to the valve and complete the shower hookup. I'm now fixing the "holes". I was watching a video on how to drywall and I thought I heard the man say the drywall thickness should be thinner than the existing wall. I placed 1/2 inch drywall in the wall that had 1/2 drywall. It appears to be flush with the wall. Did I goof?

Never heard of undersizing drywall on repairs.
Doing so would require more mud to bring the surface level.

the idea is to not have the new surface stick past ( thicker) the edge of the repaired surface so setting back a tiny bit could help but sitting out flush is ok and ideal as well...

Perhaps they were patching on a plaster wall which varies in thickness from 5/8" to 7/8" or more. Here is help with taping and matching the texture, if any (in a bathroom); http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AAxNL...feature=relmfu

17,000 dryer fires a year, when did you last clean the inside of the dryer near motor or the exhaust ducting?
