What is minimum spacing for ceiling soft studs

I'm building an enclosure around the hvac ducts in my basement and wondered what is the minimum spacing for the crossmembers that hold up the drywall on the ceiling?

I would think more in the line of maximum spacing, given that you usually lay the 2 x 4 on its side to maximize head room spacing at 24" works out well.

Just make sure you leave at least an inch between the hot air supply and any combustable materials (wood).

I'd recommend 16" centers.
