Posting for a friend. As i havent had to do any plaster repairs before. Only work with drywall..

He had some kind of issue around the windows with cracks, so he chipped away the top coat to explose the brown coat. Can see all the horse hair lol. So just buy some plaster repair mix and float it out?

Drywall won't bond to the brown coat its like cement. right?

I have used regular Durabond (brown bag, not easy-sand) over brown coat. It works as long as the brown coat is not "crumbly". You might prime first with oil primer to seal it also. Build up with Durabond and skim with ready-mix. I've never resorted to plaster mix, but that should work. If the brown coat is not in good shape I generally cut it out too, add layers of drywall to get proper thickness, then finish....

So just fill in the spot to bring the thickness out to the same as the finished surface and then feather it out wide with a top coat of ready mix? Whats a good readymix that is somewhat sandable ?

For the final coat SHEETROCK® Brand Easy Sand™ Lightweight Setting-Type Joint Compounds

USG "green lid" will work fine for a final skim to save mixing. Easy Sand will work also....
