topping mud for first coat???

I have four ~10in square patches to do in my garage. I have about a half a box of topping mud left. Is it okay to use topping as a first taping coat for small 10in square patches???

I realize all purpose is stronger, but the patches are at the tops of the walls and it is in my garage. I used the holes to fish wires from the attic.

You can use it, but don't be suprised if it cracks. Spend the few bucks to use the optimal product.

So topping mud has a tendency to crack if used as a first coat even on a small patch? I guess that means I'll be going down to pick up some all purpose. Just wish the drive wasn't so long.

Thanks.

The best choice for a first coat on a patch is a setting type mud. Setting type is the strongest. Hell....you could use spakle but it may not last.

Personally I don't use topping mud at all, but I sure wouldn't recommend it for first coat. All purpose ready mix or Easy Sand.
