Thinning mud for texturing

I have a 2 part question:

1. How much water do I add to the mud, or what is the correct consistancy of the mud for texturing?

2. I plan to do a knockdown pattern, how long should I let the mud dry after I textured it to knock the points off?

Thanks

Knockdown is applied with a dedicated texture-spray-gun, at a specific nozzle setting.

Be forewarned; propper texture application is not something accomplished easily by amatures (sp), or novices.

Excellent site: http://www.drywallschool.com/textures.htm

ALWAYS: "Test" (apply, and do your initial texture pattern) on a scrap piece of material before you apply on the actual surface.
