Tell me about stippled ceilings

I am in Canada and our house is 39 yrs old.Our living room has a stippled ceiling as does one bedroom . The bedroom we are re-doing with new paint and flooring.
i was reading about stipple ceiling possibly having asbestos, now we have been here over 25 yrs and never knew that..

I know the right thing to do is take a sample and send it away to test.. But as long as this ceiling is left alone should it not be ok.

my plan was to spray the ceiling.. I really dont want to replace it, but for interest sake, if you put drywall over top of stipple does that eliminate the threat, just seeking out options..

Asbestos is only a threat when it is disturbed as in sanding as that puts the fibers in the air.

Asbestos has not been used in drywall products since 1975. Even if you put another layer over the existing ceiling, you would need to scrape down the texture and get it reasonably flat so your nails or screws will pull up properly.....

Just painting over it would be a whole lot easier then going over it with new drywall.
Unless you want a flat ceiling.

Please post a pic of what you are calling stipple. Different areas call different textures by different names, therefore the means to deal with it will depend on what it is.

We had the stomp ceilings in our kitchen, and I scraped all the little points down, and called a drywall contractor. It was about 500sq' so it was a decent amount. He put 3 coats of drywall compound over it all, smoothed it out, sanded it, and it's perfect now. It only cost me about $550, and it was the best money ever spent!
