Tape joint over corner bead?

Quick question that hopefully has an easy answer.

In the basement where the staircase ends, the wall ends with a corner bead. I want to extend this wall all the way across the basement. Do I need to tear out the corner bead or can the new drywall be butted up against the corner bead and taped/mudded over?

Butt the new board up against the corner bead, and then run up and down the corner bead with a hammer, tapping it down a little below the surface of both boards. Tape over that like it was just a regular joint.

The hammer tapping will usually flake off the thin layer of dried mud on the corner bead.

This is often preferable to tearing off the old corner bead due to the fact that you have no idea what is under that corner bead, (how much of a hidden, torn-up gap the original installer left), nor just what damage you may cause, yourself, getting the corner bead off.
