spackle compound for filling wall holes

is spackle compound for filling holes the same as drywall mud? i have some mud and need to fill in some 1/2" holes and was gonna avoid buying spackle separate.

thanks

Spackling

No, spackling compound is denser and harder to sand than drywall mud. Use drywall mud when strength is not critical or the holes are small, or you need to be able to sand more easily. Spackling is better for plaster because it adheres well and it's tougher.
