Soffit in Basement

For the ceiling portion of a basement soffit... What's a good rule for thickness of drywall and length of unsupported span? Like 1/2" is good for 16", 5/8" for 24"...

Just trying to balance framing needs vs ceiling height under the soffits.

You will likely get more ideas/opinions here, but on mine I did 24 OC below the soffit and used 5/8ths rock. Also ran the 2X4's flat across so as to maintain as much height as I could. My soffit is about 6 feet across, so I ran a 2X4 along on top of the cross pieces and a vertical 2X up to the joist above the duct work. I did pull ups on every one of them and nothing moved. I weigh 195lbs. The insulation looking material is Roxul safe-n-sound sound deadener.
