First drywall project; probably will never do it again, so I am not looking to develop skills.

Is self adhesive tape an acceptable product for a small project? Anything to look for, as they have several kinds.?

Ok so what exatly is it your doing? A whole house, a patch?
I never use anything but paper tape for the seams, inside corners.
Web tape requires more build up and a wider seam.

Why no ceiling, going to loose a lot of heat and A/C.
Outside corners get metal corners, no tape needed.

Biggest mistakes first timers make is apply the mud to thick, over working it trying to make the first and second coats perfect, sanding the first and second coats, not making the seam wide enough.
Only need to drag the knife over the first and second coats to knock off the high places. Sandings for the last coat.

You cannot use mesh tape in corners. That is why paper tape has the crease down the middle. How are you going to address where the new drywall meets the ceiling. I just did a post about corners on the other thread "1st time drywall" Don't know if it will help you or not.

"About 30' of new wall to my workshop in the basement. One inside corner. No ceiling." I'm envisioning an L shape totaling 30'

use paper tape for joint and inside corner. in workshop, you might get away with only bedding tape and two coats over top of tape? I'd use a J bead or an L bead on all unfinished edges for some bit of protection. but that is up to you

good luck
