Screws popping in drywall

What is the main cause for screws popping in drywall?
What can be done to lessen the possibility of this happening?

Thanks

Either setting them too tight (they shouldn't tear through the paper)
or
Not having your studs(etc) flush with each other - not having a flat plane to mount to.

Sorry

I ment after they are painted. What makes the plaster fall off the screw head a year or two later?

Is it the same thing?

Sometimes some of the screws seem to have a factory coating on them that repels plaster or paint.

As lumber contracts and expands with temp and humidity changes, or if it is new construction and the wood was not completely dried before screwing or nailing the drywall, the associated forces from contraction and expansion can cause pops.

To lessen the possibility of screws and/or nail "pops", always use adhesive........
