rigid foam under drywall

I am contemplating putting rigid foam under the drywall on my ceiling. Anyone ever done this? It used to be lath and plaster but is just bare joists now. Fiberglass is still going up in the attic.

There is nothing wrong with doing as you propose so long as you treat that XPS as your vapor barrier and use unfaced insulation in the attic. Unusual, but noting wrong with it. What is your reasoning behind wanting to do this?

The R value of sheet insulation is not that great. Why ate you wanting to do it? If for insulation I save my money.

I'm not a professional., But I did stay at Holiday Inn Express last night.

i agree. A little goofy, and would be a lot of work, but if you took the time, it could be a very nice installation. It would gain a tad bit of insulation value over traditional methods because you would be getting some insulation between the drywall and the studs. Whether this would be insignificant or not, i couldn't tell you

I don't have a roof at the moment, just a tarp stretched over the rafters and a 3 mil plastic ceiling. Starting to get cool around here. foam on the ceiling would help with noise and temps.
