Replacing damp drywall / plaster in shower

Hi all. I'm new here and not good at fixing anything. I noticed an area in the shower where the plaster was damp and giving way. I removed the offending plaster & replaced it. I sanded down rougher areas the next day.

Do I apply some sort of primer before re-painting? This doesn't seem difficult, but I want to get it right the first time. Any suggestions are most welcome!

Thanks.

An oil based primer would be best

Your post suggested damp drywall and plaster? No matter if you have plaster over drywall I guess but if you do, did you also cut out and repair the underlying damp drywall? And source whatever is causing it to become damp? If not, your problem will return.
