Prime before Knockdown?

Want to do knockdown on walls, walls are a painted panel board. Do i need to prime before since its been painted already? Someone at home depot said to put about 1 cup of Gripper paint in the dry wall compound and you do not need to prime . Has anyone heard of this. Planning on painting the wall after.

Prime before Knockdown?

sand to remove any paint which may not be adhering well. Not required to remove all the old paint, just scratch it up a bit.
prime and texture. prime again and then paint.

Do NOT listen to what anyone that works in the paint department at the big box stores says, they typically have as much experience as a 5 year old.
