over 12 foot crack in the drywall in the family room/kitchen area..

What is the cause of a 12+ foot ceiling crack in the drywall in my family room/kitchen area? I have another one about 10 feet in the garage ceiling, which is running parralel to the one in the family room... Structural issue?
