Old - New Drywall Match

The old Drywall hangs a bit lower than the new drywall henchforth they are not level with each other. I have added a 2 x4 on top of the old drywall and braced it with a smaller 2 x 4 and nailed it in to the joist to give it some stability. I then screwed in some drywall screws to raise the old drywall hopling to level it with the new drywall. This helped a bit however still not 100 per-cent. Any help would be most appreciated.

Is this in a ceiling?
Without being there to see it my first guess would be someone installed the wrong thickness of drywall.
There's 1/2 and 5/8 drywall. Using the wrong one would explain the step.
I like to use 5/8 because there no sagging between the rafters.

Yes it is the ceiling. The old drywall is 1/2 , the new is 1/2.

Was the seams located in the middle of the rafters? Or is the ceiling just unlevel?
How about a picture?

What's the span between the rafters? How wide are they?

Problem area . Spacing is 18 1/2 Inch. The problem area is approx. 4 - 5 inches and is approx. 1/16 Inch variance over this distance. Im thinking I might be able to blend it in with the mud. Of course more sanding than I would like.
