Question

Is it okay to let drywall rest on a wall cabinet?

I had a section of ceiling damaged by water. The section projects out further than the rest of the ceiling. It is roughly a 6'x8' section that protrudes vertically from the ceiling by about a foot. This sections butts up against a wall which has cabinets attached to it.

I was able to remove the ceiling drywall (with some difficulty) without removing the cabinets. There is now roughly a 1/2" gap between the top of the cabinets and the ceiling joists.

My question is this; would it be okay to let the last couple of feet of drywall just rest on top of the cabinet? I am unable to reach the joist that butts up against the wall as well as a couple of feet of the joists that run perpendicular to the back wall joist (i.e. there is a roughly U shape section I wonít be able to screw the new sheet of drywall to).

I would hate to have to take the cabinets down. They appear to be old and I think it was assembled on the wall. I donít think I would be able to remove it without damaging it and I would prefer to keep it.

Thank you in advance for any advice.
