Question

Not Screwing Board Edges in Wall Corners?

I've heard some drywallers talking about not screwing the edges of the boards on walls and/or in wall corners (Letting them "float".)

Is there anything to that? I always thought all edges should be tightly screwed down.

Yes, it allows wood movement without cracking at the corners. A sheet is placed in the corner, walls or ceiling, and the second sheet is butted up against it. You screw the second sheet fully, but the first sheet is not screwed in the corner.

For ceilings you need good backers like the walls but the perimeter is not screwed.

Floating corners, figure #2: http://bestdrywall.com/files/ReduceCallbacks.pdf
Taken from: http://www.gypsum.org/pdf/GA-216-07.pdf Which also has priming before and after texturing, and most other answers to questions about drywall.....
