New drywall to old

What is the best way to blend it in? The old drywall has a textured finish. It looks like someone just applied finish across the surface with a drywall knife. I know I will have to use joint compound on the seams. Should I sand down the texture/top coat on the old drywall before applying the tape and compound, or is there a way to remove the texture top coat?

New drywall to old

Old compound(pre1980) contained asbestos particles. You would be better off applying water to the area and scraping off the texture.
