If the plan is to try and match this to do a repair, most likly it's not going to happen. You'll find it's nearly impossable to get an exact match.
Most often the whole ceiling will need to be redone to get it all even.

That was done with a crows-foot applicator is my guess. You also must consider the viscosity of the compound at the time of the application along with the quantity of compound deposited on the surface before tooling.

I wouldn't get my heart set on matching that in a patch if that's what you are doing. How about some more details on what you are doing and another picture that isn't a close-up?

You are wasting your time trying to patch it. If it has never been painted you can mist the entire ceiling with water using a garden sprayer, wait a few minutes and then go to scraping the entire ceiling. It will come off easily. Once dried lightly sand it, and start over.

The pictures don't show us anything. A much larger field of view would be more helpful.

It looks like a slap brush texture. Just fyi, those textures are commonly asbestos containing.

It's a "stipple" texture. Mud is thinned to allow it to be rolled on the ceiling. A "shag" stipple brush (available at All-Wall.com, under "texture brushes") is then used to make the texture. It is hard to blend a patch if you're not experienced. I would recommend having a pro do the repair.....
